At ten minutes before six o'clock in the morning on May twenty-first, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake tore through Campi Flegrei, the supervolcano that the western edge of Naples is not built beside, but built inside. It collapsed no apartment block and killed no one — and still it sent a country of millions into something close to panic. We have been watching this caldera breathe for years now, its ground rising nearly five feet at the center of Pozzuoli, and this shock did something the others didn't: it came from the water, from an offshore direction the instruments cover least well, and for a long, frightening stretch afterward there was only silence where the official answer should have been.
