Post-match press conference with Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe after Newcastle United’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at St James’ Park in the Premier League.

Anthony Gordon gave Newcastle the lead early on, but Chemsdine Talbi equalised in the second half before Brian Brobbey struck a late winner to seal the derby victory for Sunderland.

Howe called the result very painful and said Newcastle had not done their jobs well enough in a game of huge importance. He took responsibility for the defeat, said he understood the reaction from supporters, and admitted Newcastle conceded two really poor goals.

He also discussed the lack of control in midfield, the absence of Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley and Sandro Tonali, why Newcastle became passive after going ahead, the need for rest and proper training after a punishing run of fixtures, and how difficult recent transfer windows have been for the club.
