Daniel Dubois speaks at his full post-fight press conference after defeating Fabio Wardley with a devastating second-round stoppage in their heavyweight rematch at The O2 in London.

Dubois came flying out of the blocks, dropping Wardley just seconds into the opening round before continuing to unload with a relentless barrage of heavy punches. Wardley survived the opening three minutes, but Dubois continued the assault in round two until the contest was stopped by Wardley’s corner.

Speaking alongside promoter Frank Warren after the fight, Dubois revealed just how focused he had been before entering the ring.

“I was just in the zone quicker this time,” Dubois explained, admitting he expected Wardley to come out aggressively and was ready for a fast start from the opening bell.

Asked whether he genuinely expected the rematch to be as straightforward as it proved to be, Dubois admitted: “I kind of say I did.”

“I was just prepared for a war, and I was prepared to, you know, whatever he did wasn’t going to affect me. His punches or anything, I wouldn’t feel them. And I was just going to go after him.”

Dubois summed up his mentality even more emphatically when discussing his blistering start: “I wasn’t going to be denied. I refused to lose.”

The heavyweight champion also believes their punishing first encounter had left its mark on Wardley. Asked how much he believed he had taken out of his rival in the first fight, Dubois replied: “A lot. A lot of mental scars from him and stuff like that. So I just had to go and bring him back to that place.”

Despite the emphatic nature of the victory, both Dubois and Warren paid tribute to Wardley’s toughness. Warren described him as a powerful, strong and brave fighter, while Dubois acknowledged Wardley’s reputation for being able to absorb punishment.

“Fabio’s got a great chin. He’s known for taking punishment, but I was going through him with punches,” Dubois said, before immediately turning his attention towards the future: “Who’s next, Frank? Who’s next?”

Warren believes the version of Daniel Dubois now competing at the top of the heavyweight division is vastly improved from the fighter of only a year ago.

“Daniel, in my opinion, is not the same fighter as he was even a year ago. He’s a totally different fighter now.”

Warren outlined plans for Dubois to pursue the biggest fights available, with heavyweight unification and ultimately all four world championship belts the target.

“We want to get this unification and we want to get the best fighting the best to find out who is the best,” Warren said.

Dubois was equally clear about his own ambition: “Get the four belts.”

The press conference also features extensive discussion about the heavyweight landscape and potential future opponents for Dubois, including Filip Hrgović and Joseph Parker, while Warren also addresses possible future fights involving Tyson Fury and rising British heavyweight Moses Itauma.

Warren predicts a huge 2027 for the heavyweight division and believes a unification involving Dubois could potentially take place during the first quarter of the year as the champions work through their respective fights and mandatory obligations.

Dubois also offers words of encouragement to Wardley following the defeat, pointing towards his own career setbacks and the mentality that allowed him to rebuild and become a two-time heavyweight world champion.

“I refused to give up,” Dubois said. “I guess it’s the warrior’s mentality. Always come back and try harder and try again.”

After emphatically defeating Wardley in the rematch, Dubois makes clear that he has no intention of slowing down.

“I want to continue this momentum from this fight and take it into the next. That’s where I’m thinking.”
