Newcastle was one of the most requested cities on this channel. Everyone wanted to know: is the "Toon" falling into decay like so many other UK cities, or is there more to the story? I went there to find out for myself.

What I found was a city of extreme contrasts. On one hand, a world-famous, high-energy nightlife where things can get crazy in a heartbeat. On the other hand, a visible struggle with substance abuse and streets that feel a world away from the tourist guides.

I didn't stay in the city center. I headed straight into the neighborhoods that locals warned me about: Arthurs Hill and Elswick. I spoke with the people who live there to see if the reputation of these areas is justified or if the internet is exaggerating. Between the heavy police presence and the raw stories from the locals, Newcastle surprised me in ways I didn't expect.
